Well I haven't been doing much this summer. I haven't conformed to society's expectations of me getting a job, though it would be helpful. One thing I've been doing is reading and watching movies. I've read through 1 John, The Big Fisherman (the sequel to The Robe, which is one of my favorites), Schools of Conversion: 12 Marks of a New Monasticism, and I have just started Tortured for Christ by Richard Wurmbrand (the founder of Voice of the Martyrs).
I love 1st John immensely! I don't think I had ever truly read it before now. It seems so much more rich and meaningful. My favorite verse from it is 1 John 3:18 (which I've memorised) "Dear Children, let us not love with word or tongue, but with actions and truth!" (exclamation point added). I love John. I think of a kindly grandfather writing the words. He always addresses us My children.
The Big Fisherman, while not as good as The Robe, was enjoyable. It was techinically supposed to be about Peter, but it was mainly about a half arab-half Jewish girl who meets Jesus.
Then I just finished 12 marks of a New Monasticism. This past year I have been very intrigued by and drawn to New Monasticism. The whole idea of people living in intentional community seems very close to what the Church is called to. Obviously it is not nessecary for salvation and is not the only model that works, but it definitely seems to reflect the church in Acts. I really hope that God will let me be apart of an intentional community. This book is a good source for anyone trying to figure out what New Monasticism is.
Now I'm reading Tortured for Christ by Richard Wurmbrand. He was the founder of Voice of the Martyrs. The book tells of his experience in communist Rumania and its communist prisons.
I'm still deciding between several books to read next so if you have any recomendations please let me know.
