In the book I am reading (Surprised by Hope by N.T. Wright) the author asserts that death was part of God's original plan, but because of sin it was corrupted. I'm not sure if I agree that death was part of the original plan. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I agree. I do not believe death was in God's original plan. Unfortunately when Adam & Eve fell that death was put in the mix. Though we realize it is inevitable, it is never easy.
I'll let you know when I get to that part in the book.

God's concern for humanity's longevity did not arise until after the sin took place. Gen. 3:22-3 indicates that God banished Adam and Eve for 2 specific reasons: 1) they had sinned, and 2) continued presence in Eden would allow access to eternal life.
Had the sin not taken place, Adam and Eve would not have lost access to the tree of life, which had previously been granted to them in Genesis 2:16-17.
Without having read the passage in it's context, my initial estimation is that N.T. Wright is Wrong.
